Summer Skincare Tips from Celebrity Esthetician Joanna Vargas

Celebrities, socialites and supermodel like Karlie Kloss, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams flock to the Joanna Vargas Salon, where the celebrity facialist who bears its namesake offers her handcrafted organic skincare collection and state of the art anti-aging treatments like an LED facial. Vargas took time out from slathering the skin of starlets to offer tips and a recipe to help you get glowing during the summer season while protecting your complexion from the elements.

Shielding from the Sun

I love the mineral powder SPF’s on the market right now.  They are SPF 30 to provide protection from sun damage and are great over makeup.  I also love that they are easy to reapply throughout the day and they help eliminate shine on the skin when the weather is hot and humid.  If you are out shopping and walking around all day, you should reapply, dusting more on every few hours.  However, in a normal work day this wouldn’t be necessary.

Hydrating Your Skin

Keep in mind, summer skin needs less moisture but just as much TLC because of our increased exposure to the environment. Once the weather gets warmer, I suggest changing your skincare routine to just serums. In my own line I have a Daily Serum which is inspired by my love of green juices. It contains oat grass juice which boosts your lymphatic system, chlorophyll to oxygenate the face and hyaluronic acid to keep the skin hydrated. A daytime serum is great to apply under sunscreen, which you absolutely cannot live without.

I always encourage people to carry a little bottle of rose water spray in their bag.  Rose is awesome for hydrating skin when mixed with water and feels incredible when you are getting sticky from walking around outside.

Retexturing for a Rosy Glow

A big step to making the skin look good during the sticky summer months is making sure you exfoliate twice a week. It is an important step that will make you look like you have just had a facial! I also recommend taking your cleanser in your gym bag and washing your face right after a workout and not waiting till you get home. It will keep your pores cleaner in between facials and let the skin breathe.

Recipe to Revive Sensitive & Sun-Damaged Skin

Blend 3 tablespoons of aloe vera juice, 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel and 2 drops of rose oil. Apply with a cotton ball selectively to damaged areas or all over your entire face.
