What You Need to Know About Shampooing

What-You-Need-to-Know-About-Shampooing

We all shampoo our hair in some way to keep it clean. But have you ever had questions on how much shampoo to use or how often to shampoo your hair? Here are your most common questions, answered.

How often should you shampoo?

There is no right answer to this question and it is based on your hair type. If you have very oily hair or have a strenuous workout routine, you will want to wash your hair daily. If your hair is normal or has oily roots and dry ends, try washing every other day. You can use dry shampoo on your roots in between if it starts looking greasy. If your hair is dry or you live in a dry climate, wash every few days. Washing your hair every day could lead to breakage and it rinses out color treated hair much faster, so just be aware of what works for you.

How much shampoo should you use?

If your hair is very short, you only need a dime sized amount. If your hair is longer, a quarter sized amount is enough. But, as long as you rinse it all out thoroughly, you really can’t use too much. Using a smaller amount is always better to ensure you rinse it all out and you save money on shampoo. Shampoos often last for two to three years. An expired shampoo won’t harm your hair; it simply won’t be as effective. It may also have a strange smell and separation in the bottle if it is expired.

What water temperature should you use?

Warm water is best when shampooing and rinsing. For the final rinse before you finish washing your hair, use cold water to enhance shine.

How often should you use a deep cleansing shampoo?

If you are a swimmer, use a lot of styling products or have mineral-rich water, you should use clarifying or deep cleansing shampoo twice a month. If you worry about the effects on your color of deep cleansing shampoos, try using white vinegar to get rid of the gunk in your hair. You only need a quarter of a cup and one cup of water. Mix and leave on your hair for up to two minutes then rinse thoroughly.

Do you really need an expensive salon shampoo?

No. It really comes down to personal preference and budget. Salon products are more high quality and can be gentler on your hair. Try several different brands and see which one works the best for your hair and the one you prefer the most.

Do you really need conditioner?

Yes. It makes hair more manageable, especially if you are prone to dry and damaged hair. It helps to protect your hair from heat styling and styling products. You may also have to experiment and try several conditioners before you find one that works best with your hair and makes styling easier.

When do you need to switch shampoos, if ever?

Unless a product has been “improved”, if your hair starts acting differently, it is your hair and not the shampoo that has changed. You don’t usually need to change shampoos unless you want a different result, such as volume or have recently colored your hair. Then go for a color treated shampoo. Buildup could also be an issue. Try using a clarifying shampoo and then go back to your old shampoo to see if it helps.
