What if I told you, you could freeze your fat? Would you? Well I did. I first learned about fat freezing from Timothy Ferriss in his book The 4-Hour Body. As part of a weight loss program Timothy recommends placing an ice pack on the back of the neck and trapezius, drinking cold water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning and taking cold showers. I did try The 4-Hour Body, but couldn’t commit to the ice part, since I hate the cold.
We are now seeing freezing fat techniques becoming cosmetic in in the form of CoolSculpting. The procedure is done by positioning a device on the body that draws your fat bulge between two cooling panels. The process is called Cryolipolysis which uses cooling to destroy fat, and is an FDA approved medical treatment used to reshape body contours. The process causes cell death of subcutaneous tissue without any damage to other cells or surrounding skin. The dead crystalized fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body and this is completely non-invasive. Now this sounds like something I could get into to help irradiate my stubborn back fat. CoolSculpting can be used on areas of the body such as the abdomen, love handles, and back fat, and costs around $750 per treated area.
My procedure was done at the MedSpa44 in New York City. MedSpa 44 is a full service spa that offers procedures such as CoolSculpting and Ultherapy. The procedure was performed by a very beautiful Carmen Fernandez who is a laser and skincare expert and head aesthetician at the facility. Carmen was very pleasant and informative as she explained the procedure step by step. The only time I was uncomfortable was in the beginning when a very cold gel sheet was placed on my back before the machine was actually placed on. She explained it was like jumping in a cold pool. After the machine was placed on my back, Carmen explained how the procedure worked. What I also liked about Carmen was that she has experienced the procedure herself, so she was able to discuss the procedure in the first person. I was very comfortable drinking water and even texting on my cell phone during the procedure. Each area treated took about one hour, so for me it was a four hour procedure. Sometimes several treatments are needed but usually only one. Noticeable results would take place in one to three months, because it takes that amount time for the frozen fat to be dissolved by the body. I was told the results are permanent and besides swelling and minor pain in the area, there are no side effects.
Since the procedure 2 weeks ago I’ve had some swelling, minimum pain and some itching. I’m very excited to see the results, and I will report back in the future with some before and after’s (final results are visible after about 12 weeks). To see an actual CoolSculpting session, you can view one done on The Dr.Oz Show.
