Whenever a new phone is released, my main priority is checking out the quality of pictures it takes. Poor camera resolution is always a deal breaker for me. One downside to a great camera, however, is that it’s hard to hide your imperfections. Acne, dark eye circles, bags, wrinkles… it shows it all. One of the most stubborn problems you can count on a good camera exposing, is large pores. Not only are pores responsible for releasing sebum to the surface of the skin, they’re also responsible for housing the follicles of hair all over your body. But just because we need them to perform double-duty, doesn’t mean we need to see them doing their job. Check out what causes large pores and how you can minimize their appearance.
Causes of Large Pores
- Hormones. Hormones are almost entirely responsible for regulating your body’s oil glands. In turn, oil glands produce the sebum that is released through your pores. When your oil glands produce an excess of sebum, that sebum interacts with dead skin cells to create a clog. This clog is what causes the pores to become enlarged.
- Genetics. Like many other skin care issues, the size of your pores are also determined by genetics. If your mother and grandmother had large pores throughout their lives, unfortunately, you’re predisposed to large pores.
- Age. As you get older, your skin begins to thin and lose it’s elasticity. Those factors, combined with the sun damage you experience as you age, also contribute to large pores.
- Skin Type. If you have combination, oily, or naturally thick skin, you can also count on large, visible pores.
- Poor Skin Care. Dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria, all contribute greatly to large pores. If you’re not washing your skin properly, these things result in your pores becoming clogged, dilated, and enlarged. You should also avoid sleeping with makeup on, and remove sweat and excess oil from your skin as soon as possible
Preventing and Treating Large Pores
- Cleanse Your Skin. Although it isn’t actually possible to “shrink” your pores, you can reduce the appearance of large pores significantly by cleansing your skin daily of excess oils, dirt, and bacteria. Choose a face and body cleanser that is designed for oily skin, and also contains salicylic acid. I recommend “Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash” ($7), because it removes all debris from your skin without leaving behind other pore-clogging residue.
- Exfoliate. Exfoliating just a few times weekly does wonders for removing dead skin cells and making pores appear smaller. Although simply using a cleanser is great, an exfoliator detoxifies your skin and gives you a deeper cleansing. Try “Olay Regenerist Detoxifying Pore Scrub” ($9) to help diminish the look of pores for a more radiant, regenerated appearance.
- Use a Serum. An effective pore serum is one that unblocks pores, treats excess sebum, reduces inflammation, prevents blemish formation, and of course, minimizes the appearance of pores. I recommend “Boots No7 Pore Refining Serum” ($17), because it does all those things, and more.
- Use a Primer. If your makeup is guilty of accentuating your large pores, you should probably stop skipping the primer. Although a primer won’t change the size of your pores, it will fill in your pores so they’re less visible. Try “Tarte Clean Slate Poreless 12 Hour Perfecting Primer” ($30) or “Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer” (about $10). Also, cream and powder foundations are better at concealing pores than liquid foundations.
Absorb Excess Oil. Since you can’t stop your skin from producing excess oil, get rid of it before it becomes a problem. Use “Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets” ($5) when necessary.
