Think accelerated aging is just from the sun? Think again. Certain foods and drinks can actually speed up the aging process and make you look older than you are, just as other healthy foods can help slow down the effects of time. Here are some food and drinks to only drink or eat in moderation unless you want to look older faster.



1. Sugar is a big one. Even if you avoid the cupcakes and other desserts, it can often be hidden in other seemingly innocent foods. Sugar clings to proteins in your body and creates AGEs, which are advanced glycation end products that worsen diseases and add extra force in your body’s natural aging process, making you look older much faster.

2. Alcohol lovers beware. At the holidays, often alcoholic beverages are loaded up with sugar and creaminess, making them even unhealthier. Stick with dry wine or basic alcohol like tequila or vodka and drink plenty of water while you’re drinking. If you drink too much, your liver and other organs will be filled with toxins and you can’t absorb nutrients as well, leading to bad skin, among other problems.

3. Avoid refined and processed oils. Think corn, soybean, safflower, canola oil and any fried foods. Focus on healthy oils and fats such as fish, nuts, seeds, olives and avocado.

4. Caffeine can be a problem. Caffeine raises your stress hormone cortisol and if those levels remain high all the time, it can affect your skin negatively.

5. Trans fats are another thing to avoid. Too many trans fats make your skin stiff, old and inflexible. They clog your arteries and smaller blood vessels, which can affect how your skin looks.

6. A high salt diet can dehydrate your skin, making you look tired and bloated.

7. Energy drinks are just as bad as too much caffeine. They affect your skin as well as your teeth. If your teeth are damaged and yellow, it makes you look older than you are.

8. Lastly, saturated fat is a contributor to aging looks. Look out for saturated foods like butter, full-fat dairy and processed or fatty meats. Studies have shown that people who have a high fat diet have more wrinkles than those who eat a lower fat diet. So watch what you eat.
