How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

The holidays are an exciting time. Lots of parties, yummy treats and busy days can make it hard to stick to a healthy routine and it is prime time to pack on the pounds. It can be hard to avoid all of that Halloween candy, extra drinks and appetizers at parties and delicious desserts at your family get-togethers. Here are some tips to keep you healthy and happy this holiday season.

1. Eat a healthy snack before you head to that party filled with delicious desserts. If you show up to a party or dinner on an empty stomach, you are more likely to gorge on all the food you know you should avoid, leading to stomach aches and weight gain. Have a healthy snack before you leave the house, such as veggies and dip, a slice of bread with peanut butter or a piece of fruit to fuel you up so you can stick to your healthy diet and only have one treat instead of twenty.

2. If you can, bring a healthy appetizer or dish. This will ensure you know you have something healthy to munch on and help other partygoers who are also looking for healthy alternatives to all the holiday goodies.

3. Stick to a workout routine even with a busy schedule and shorter days. It is extremely hard to fit in a workout when you have work, parties, holiday shopping and a million other things on your mind. Not to mention when the days get shorter and it is dark at 5 pm, all you want to do is crawl into bed instead of do some yoga. But try to keep up with your workout choices to maintain a healthy attitude.

4. Drink more water! Water will help flush out toxins from the extra alcohol and food you might be having at parties and it will help keep you full so you don’t overindulge when you’re simply just thirsty. Water will also help keep your immune system working so you are less likely to get sick and it will make your skin smoother. Perfect for those holiday pictures!

5. Lastly, get plenty of sleep. You’re less likely to get as much sleep when you’re busy with parties and holiday shopping, but give your body a rest when it needs it to keep yourself healthy and less likely to gain weight.
