4 Ways To Stay Fit This Holiday

Even though most of the holiday celebrations are over, there may still be family or friend parties or work celebrations to attend. Not to mention getting your work done before the New Year or the stress of making your resolutions. With all the busy schedules of this time of year, it can be very easy to fall off the fitness train and let yourself go.

Most people gain at least a few pounds during the holiday season due to eating more, sleeping less and not working out. Even though a few pounds may seem like nothing, it could lead to the routine of an unhealthy lifestyle and major health issues in the future. Here are some easy ways to keep yourself fit and healthy and maintain your balanced lifestyle, even with holiday treat temptations and busy schedules.

1. Sleep! Don’t forgo sleep for other activities. Make plans to leave the holiday party at a specific time, schedule your day properly so you aren’t staying up late finishing tasks and simply put down your phone and turn off your TV at a decent hour. If you continue to maintain a good sleeping schedule of 6 to 8 hours a night, you will feel more rested, make more mindful decisions and boost your immune system. Sleep is crucial to staying fit and healthy. If you have to choose between working out or getting those 8 hours of sleep, choose sleep at this time of year. Your body will thank you.

2.Keep exercising! Schedule time in your busy schedule for a workout, no matter how busy you are. You don’t have to spend hours at the gym either. Simply try to be active 30 minutes a day or make a goal to walk around 8,000-10,000 steps a day. These 30 minutes could be a high intensity workout at home, playing active video games like Just Dance, cleaning or decorating your whole house, going for a walk with your dog and the list goes on. Pick a few activities that you have to do anyway and make it into a workout. Pinterest and Youtube are great resources for at-home workouts that won’t cost you a dime and can be quick and easy to do during the day or in the evening. Your body will thank you for helping to keep off those extra pounds from holiday foods and you will maintain a healthy stress level.

3. Watch what you drink. With the holidays, especially New Year’s Eve and dreaded family holiday parties, it can be easy to have a few too many alcoholic beverages. Some drinks can tack on a ton of extra calories and alcohol will dehydrate you, lower your immune system responses and disrupt your sleep. Try to keep it at one drink per holiday party and look for low calorie options. Vodka with a seltzer is always a good low calorie option.

4. Make good food choices. Don’t starve yourself all day in anticipation for a holiday feast. You’ll just end up overindulging; eating more calories than you would normally and even feel sick. Who wants that? If you are worried that there won’t be any healthy options at a holiday party, bring your own dish to share. Then you will be sure there will be something for you to eat and you won’t be tempted to eat more of the unhealthy stuff. Load up your plate with vegetables and lean proteins. But don’t deprive yourself either! Many treats are only offered to you at the holiday season, so don’t miss out. Just have a small portion and savor it! Yum!
