Causes & Cures for Vaginal Dryness

This can be a really uncomfortable topic, but it can happen to anyone. It can especially happen as you age and it is just plain annoying! If you’re too dry down there, it can lead to painful sex, bleeding and problems with urination. Here are some causes of vaginal dryness:

1. Medications like birth control, antihistamines or even asthma medications can mess with your natural lubrication. If you notice a difference down there when you start taking a new medication, talk to your doctor about alternatives.

2. Just like medications, medical issues can cause dryness too. Heart disease or diabetes can cause it, as well as cancer patients who receive radiation or chemotherapy treatments.

3. As you age, hormonal changes can cause dryness too, especially if you’re going through menopause. Any time there is a decrease in estrogen in the body, it can cause vaginal dryness.

4. Certain soaps or hygiene products. Never douche because it will just lead to dryness or infections. Soaps with chemicals, dyes or fragrances can also cause dryness and irritation.

5. If you’re under a lot of stress and anxiety, it can lead to a slew of physical symptoms, including dryness and less sexual desire.

Here are some ways to heal yourself from the dryness:
1. Drink more water. Vaginal dryness could simply be caused by dehydration. Add a squeeze of lemon, some sea salt or maple syrup in a glass of water to help boost your electrolytes and ease the dryness fast.

2. Use oils. Eating coconut oil can help lubricate you as well as using lube. If you have chronic dryness, your doctor can prescribe you an over-the-counter lube to use to keep you moisturized.

3. Ask your partner for more foreplay. Vaginal dryness can simply be the cause of less desire, especially if you’re in a long-term relationship. More foreplay can get you to where you need to be. Some women are just different in this area.

4. If you’re into holistic treatments, eat different foods or herbs as recommended by an acupuncturist or naturopath. Ask them what natural methods they recommend for this issue if you want to try the holistic route before you see an MD.

Have you ever experienced vaginal dryness? It isn’t something to be embarrassed about because all women will experience it at one time or another! What is your go-to tip when you’re feeling dry down there?
