How to Indulge When You’re Broke

Indulge_When_Broke

New beauty products come out every day and they might be calling to you from your phone, television and while shopping. But if you’re on a budget, it can seem impossible to keep up with the trends and make sure you can pay your bills. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to look and feel your best. Here are some easy ways to indulge when you’re broke:

  1. DIY face masks or scrubs. Look in your kitchen and pantry for ingredients and make your own face masks and scrubs instead of heading to the spa or buying expensive masks. Look for recipes on Pinterest. Most contain only a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand and are relatively simple to whip up.
  2. Buy makeup at the drugstore instead of Sephora. Fancy and expensive makeup can be better made and make you feel like a million bucks, but usually it isn’t necessary. Drugstore makeup brands often work just as effectively and have many inexpensive options to choose from. Do your research or try a few different products and brands until you find one you love. Most drugstores will let you return makeup, even if it’s been opened and used.
  3. Skip the nail salon and do your nails yourself or swap services with a friend. Getting your nails done professionally is a great treat, but if you’re on a budget, skip this luxury for now. Go through your nail polishes and use a color you’ve neglected for a while. If you’re tired of doing your nails yourself, ask a friend if they would like to do your nails and you can do theirs. This can make it feel like you’re at a salon.
  4. Resist the urge. Use up products that you already own before you buy new ones out of temptation or boredom. Go through all your beauty products and spring clean and then use products until they’re gone before you get new ones.
  5. If you’re dealing with dry skin or hair, skip a shower a week or simply don’t shower every day. You’ll save your skin and using up all of your shower products.
  6. Buy bulk or multi-purpose products. If you need to buy a product, try to buy a multi-purpose product that you can use for eyes and lips, for example. Also try to buy in bulk because it may be cheaper in the long run.
  7. Remember that less is more. Use less makeup or products on a daily basis so they last longer and you won’t have to shell out the cash for a new one as often.
  8. Try before you buy. Much like drugstores will take back used products, most makeup stores will let you try or sample products before you buy them. If you’re looking into an expensive beauty product, ask for a sample to use before you commit fully.
  9. Just say no to expensive perfumes. Body sprays are cheaper and smell just as good. You can also save up perfume samples from magazines.
  10. Ignore the impulse bin. You know… the items they place right by the cash register that entice you to buy just one more thing? Don’t even look at them or better yet, head to the store when you know it won’t be busy and when you can check out right away instead of waiting in line. Then you won’t be tempted.
