Thought your acne problems left when puberty ended? You might be wondering why all of a sudden, you are experiencing acne problems as an adult. Whether you’ve had acne issues all along or it is something relatively new, here are the top causes of adult acne:
- The most common cause of adult acne for women is hormonal changes. You might start to experience acne when you PMS, during your period, during pregnancy or during menopause. If you are experiencing consistent acne, you might have a hormonal condition and need to talk to your doctor.1
- You might need to do something as simple as changing your sheets. Sleeping on dirty sheets or pillowcases can cause dirt and oil to get on your skin and make you break out.
- You might also need to clean up your act. Never go to bed with makeup on, remember to cleanse your face properly twice a day and avoid touching or picking at your face.
- You may need to change up your diet. A diet heavy in processed and junk foods can often cause acne. Look at your current eating habits and make some adjustments. If you find as you eat healthier and exercise that your acne is disappearing, you know that an unhealthy lifestyle was the cause.1
Once you’ve determined the cause of your adult acne, now is the time to stop it in its tracks. If your acne has been consistent and/or severe, you might want to see a dermatologist who can determine if you need a prescription treatment. If your acne only pops up once in a while, try a topical treatment and continue to eat healthier and exercise. Make sure you take off your makeup in the evening, clean your makeup brushes often and clean anything often that regularly touches your face, like your pillowcase.
