What to Know Before You Start a Kickboxing Routine

Have you ever tried kickboxing? Kickboxing is an exercise that combines boxing, Karate and Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) fighting fundamentals and is set to music. The benefits can be amazing, which is probably why a ton of celebrities are trying kickboxing lately. Kickboxing works many parts of your body at once and is a cardio exercise. You’re working all of your muscles and toning them, all while burning tons of calories and working your heart.

So, what do you need to know if you’re interested in starting a kickboxing routine?

Whether you plan to take a class at your local gym or want to try it at home with a video, make sure you practice and have perfect form or you can get hurt pretty easily. You should also know that classes tend to be pretty fast-paced, but as with any workout, you can always go at your own pace to avoid burnout or injury. If you head to a class, make sure you tell your instructor that you’re new so they can give you special attention and help you, making sure you aren’t doing anything that might injure you. If you try a video or workout plan at home, make sure to follow the instructions well and practice slowly at first to really learn the routine properly.

What should you wear and what equipment do you need?

Skip the baggy sweatshirts and sweatpants. You’ll want to wear something form fitting to avoid your clothing getting in the way of your newly learned moves. Wear athletic sneakers too. You also might be asked to buy or rent boxing gloves, a helmet, shin guards, ankle support, hand wraps and a mouth guard. If you are unsure what equipment you’ll need for a class, call up before and ask to make sure you come prepared because every class is different. You will not likely need all that equipment for a beginner’s class. Don’t forget water because you’ll be sweating a lot!

Don’t be nervous about starting, even if you are a newbie to this type of exercise or feel intimidated by others. Everyone starts somewhere and kickboxing is a great workout that anyone can try! Kickboxing can help you get into shape, stay toned and healthy and even help you build more confidence.
