Summer is here! Now is the time to take a break from the gym, indoor workout classes and working out in front of the TV. Embrace the outdoors, the warmer weather and use mother nature as an inspiration to work out and do better for yourself. Here are some exercises you can easily do for free in your backyard, at a park or anywhere outdoors. Some moves require a bench, table, chairs or steps but most you can modify to try anywhere and anytime. Incorporate exercises moves while your kids play outdoors, while you’re doing yard work or as you enjoy the summer sun. Here are some of our favorite moves:
If you have a little more time, go for a jog or a walk. If you aren’t a runner, start by alternating walking and jogging until you can get up to a more comfortable and faster pace. If you are more of an experienced runner or looking to get some cardio in quickly, try running sprints. Run across your backyard or down the street as fast as you can and then jog back to the start. Repeat several times for a quick burn.
Try some different lunges to work out your legs and butt. Lunge forward on one leg to work out your legs and lunge backward on one leg to work out your butt area. Switch legs and do multiple sets.
To get your heart rate up, try basic jumping jacks. Start with about 20 and work your way up to more.
Next, try some squats. Alternate between regular squats and deeper squats. To feel more of a burn, try using a kettlebell or dumbbells while you squat.
Try some push-ups outdoors. Use a table or a chair if you don’t want to put your hands in the ground. You can squat back while holding onto a table or chair that is behind you and reap the same benefits as a push-up.
Think of fun things where you move as exercise too. Challenge a friend to a race. Go for a bike ride. Play with your kids. Clean up your yard, weed, and plant flowers. Have a dance party in your backyard. You don’t have to be doing specific exercises to get the benefits of exercising and moving your body.
Remember, when you are working out outside make sure to apply sunscreen often, wear a hat and sunglasses and stay out of the sun if you can. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated, especially in warmer weather.
